- Sprint- or skill-dominant sports in-season: Keep Zone 2 doses minimal to preserve sharpness; use it primarily for recovery.
- Altitude, heat waves, or unusual life stress: Let RPE and breath cues lead. Numbers will lie.
- Medical considerations: Beta-blockers flatten heart-rate response; pregnancy and certain arrhythmias alter tolerance. Talk test becomes primary, and medical guidance matters.
- When performance stalls after a solid aerobic base: You may need more threshold or VO2 work, better fueling, or more sleep—not more easy minutes.
Used at the right dose and truly easy, Zone 2 training raises the floor under everything else you do. The art is choosing modalities you can repeat, guarding intensity so it stays aerobic, and tracking the quiet signals that tell you your engine is growing.
